Tuesday, September 15th @ 9:00pm on WGVU Public Television - PBS FRONTLINE presents Policing the Police 2020 examining the realities of race and policing in America in a year that has put structural racism on display. WGVU spoke with the film's correspondent.

“The country’s on fire and their anger is directed at law enforcement officers.”

NARRATOR:

“A national outcry and one police force trying to change.”

“Can this be done in a way that still respects people’s rights.”

Jelani Cobb is correspondent of FRONTLINE’s Policing the Police 2020.

“In the course of our interviews Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark, he made a really interesting point. He said that the police were no different than any other institution in terms of their attitudes and the ways in which Black lives are not valued. The difference is, unlike housing, education, the health care system, police have guns. And that makes their attitudes take on potentially calamitous outcomes."

Cobb points out laws police unions have successfully lobbied for and their governing of accountability.

“The war on our police must end."

They don’t want to be murdered.”
