West Michigan observes National Day of Racial Healing

ISAAC

Tuesday, Jan. 19 marks the National Day of Racial Healing. The annual call to action was created by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 2017 as a time for individuals and communities to come together to explore common humanity and build relationships toward an equitable world.

The day is observed across the nation, including in  Muskegon County, where this year Hackley Public Library is putting their own spin on the conversation, by hosting a community forum on its website.

"At Hackley Library, we’re all about embracing positive change, embracing diversity, inclusion and equity and creating that safe space," marketing and programming coordinator, Mallory Metzger said.

The forum will run from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and is a product of a "mini grant" the library received from the Community Foundation of Muskegon County. In addition to encouraging residents to engage in conversation, Hackley Public Library is directing traffic to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's online event.

The fifth annual event will be held virtually, starting at 3:00pm on Tuesday. Festivities will include performances, conversations and forums about race and equity, featuring Hollywood celebrities like John Legend, Padma Lakshmi and more. The Detroit Youth Choir will also be performing. Registration for the free event can be found here.
