Before his scheduled campaign rally in southeast Michigan, GOP Presidential nominee Donald Trump made a last minute stop in Grand Rapids. He visited Kent County GOP headquarters with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and then headed to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

“The minute they saw him there were cheers and claps and everybody had their cell phones out.” Elaine Didier is Gerald R. Ford Library and Museum Director. She explains Donald Trump stopped by to pay his respects to President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady Betty Ford at the gravesite and stop into the museum.

“We did show him the oval office. He did like the big desk. In fact, he did go on at some length. Don Holloway, our curator, was telling him the history about Presidential desks and how Presidents choose different ones and he was very enamored he liked the big desk aspect that President Ford had and we said, ‘Yah, it’s a really good working space.’”

“It was very spur of the moment,” explains Joe Calvaruso, executive director of the Gerald R. Ford Foundation. “You’re not putting up pipe and drape. They’re here to see the facility and it was really nice to have them come and think so much of President and Mrs. Ford that he wanted to take time out of his day in west Michigan and pay a visit.”
