With some residents reluctant to get vaccinated, Ottawa County urging those to educate themselves

As the number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to drop in Ottawa County, health officials are urging the public to get educated on vaccine safety.

Health officials say the numbers have dropped now for seven weeks straight, and there now is a feeling of ‘cautious optimism’ among Ottawa County Public Health staff there is a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, as virtually all health care workers and residents over 65 have been vaccinated. At least, those who have wanted to be.

Kristina Wieghmink is Ottawa County’s Public Health Officer.

“Well our case trend is looking better,” Wieghmink said. “We are only having about 33 cases per day, which is significantly better than November when we were nearing 450 cases per day, (which) was our highest point,” she said.

Still, Wieghmink says, there is large portion of the population that is still reluctant to get the vaccine when it becomes available, and therefore the county is urging residents to educate themselves on the vaccines.

“It is safe, it is effective,” she said.

Wieghmink says now anyone over the age of 50 years old is eligible to be vaccinated, and are urged to visit the County’s website to sign up.
