Shootings force Grand Rapids-area carnival to close early

A popular 10-day carnival near Grand Rapids closed early because of two shootings nearby.

Police made the announcement Saturday.

The annual carnival, which is known for amusement park rides, was supposed to run through Sunday.

It's held in the parking lot of a former movie theater on 28th Street in Wyoming.

There were shootings Thursday and Friday near the carnival. One person was hurt.

The carnival was a fundraiser for the Wyoming parks department and a group that sponsors recreation programs. The goal was $30,000.

The business manager for a company that provides rides and other amusements at the carnival is deeply disappointed.

Doug Burtch was expecting large weekend crowds because of the warm weather.

He tells The Grand Rapids Press that the financial consequences are "devastating."
