Right to Life submits signatures to outlaw abortion procedure

Right to Life

An anti-abortion group has turned in petition signatures seeking to outlaw the dilation-and-evacuation procedure. It’s expected the Legislature will approve the initiative early next year.

A petition initiative must be approved by lawmakers or it goes to the ballot, where voters will decide its fate. Republican majorities in the House and the Senate have already adopted similar bills, so that’s pretty much a foregone conclusion.
Genevieve Marnon with Right to Life of Michigan says that would clear the way for the initiative to become law despite the fact that it’s opposed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“Because of the way the constitution was written, this particular process is not subjected to a gubernatorial veto, so Gretchen Whitmer may not like it, but she can’t veto it.”

But abortion rights groups say that won’t be the final word. They are already planning legal challenges if and when the initiative becomes law.
