On Tuesday, residents of the second ward of Grand Rapids took to the polls to cast votes during the city’s 2019 primary election on who would represent them at the city commission. Over 6,000 votes with a voter turnout of about 13%.
The candidates competing for the seat currently occupied by Commissioner Ruth Kelly were Michael Farage, Wendy Falb and Milinda Ysasi. According to the unofficial results, Ysasi received 42% of the votes, Falb received 38% and Farage received 18%.
Although Ysasi received most of the votes but because no candidates received 50% of votes required to avoid the run off – Ysasi and Falb will be on the upcoming November ballot. Here is Ysasi after the results were announced on Tuesday night.
“As the results were coming in, it was clear that the message we were projecting around a Grand Rapids that has accessibility to the growth and prosperity for everyone is the vision that we want to see for the future that resonated with second ward voters across the entire ward.”
Ysasi is endorsed by commissioner Kelly, and commissioner Seneta Lenear while Falb has been endorsed by current commissioner Nate Moody, and Jon O’Conner.
