Protest breaks out at U of M over COVID-19 plans

University of Michigan

The union representing graduate student employees at the University of Michigan began its strike Tuesday over the university's COVID-19 reopening plans. Organizers and supporters of the Graduate Employees’ Organization marched and chanted in groups around U of M’s campus.

Amir Fleischmann is a doctoral student in political science and the secretary for the G-E-O. He says G-E-O members have been energized, both on the picket lines and in negotiations.

"We’re not expecting to get 100 percent of our demands, but we do need to see movement in each of the different categories of demands that we have," Fleischmann said.

In a statement, a U of M spokesman says communications between the union and the university continue.
