As we honor Veterans on this Veteran’s Day.  The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is honoring some local veterans in Muskegon with care packages.

“It’s extremely important to have these events, you know, we’ve all been pivoting, trying to figure out what to do during COVID, and how to reach out to Veterans.”

Erika Hoover is the Women Veterans and Special Populations Coordinator at the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.  She says on Saturday, they will honor local Veterans in Muskegon.  Appropriately titled, “Operation Veteran Care Package”, about 100 Veterans will be served.

“These have lots of resources in them, suicide prevention, in the Muskegon area, gift cards, turkeys and food boxes., what the community can provide and they have sanitary things in them, masks and gloves.”

Hoover says “The Operation Veteran Care Package” events are a collaborative effort.  Muskegon’s even is Saturday at the Muskegon County Veterans Affairs office.  The goal is to reach out to veterans and National Guard Reserve members to show gratitude during these challenging times.

“Really important that we reach out, and I know that a lot of veterans are really struggling right now, um, as are many people, but I think it’s important that we recognize the significance of service and I it’s just a great day to celebrate that.”

On Saturday, Veterans who are signed up will get everything from food like turkeys or chickens as well as gift cards. It will be a COVID friendly, contact free event.    Officials say the care packages are just one way of showing appreciation, adding the ongoing campaign reinforces their larger mission to serve Michigan’s more than 550-thousand veterans and their families and get them connected to the benefits and resources they’ve earned for their service to the nation.

Veterans will also receive a handwritten note of thanks from students across the country.
