National Academy of Sciences elects VARI researcher

The National Academy of Sciences has elected its third Van Andel Research Institute scientist.

Van Andel Research Institute cancer scientist Stephen Baylin has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Doctor Baylin is a co-leader focused on VARI’s Stand Up To Cancer Epigenetics Dream Team carrying out four clinical trials developing new therapies for various form of leukemia and colorectal cancer.

A professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine, Baylin studies cell biology and epigenetics which VARI tells us is “the study of modifications that affect how DNA is expressed.”

The National Academy of Sciences explains it “is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars. Established by an Act of Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, the NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology.”
