Muskegon Public Schools Bond vote Tuesday is a go

Despite Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to extend the state’s stay-at-home order until May 15, the City of Muskegon is moving forward with this Tuesday’s elections.

Part of that reason, is it’s a big decision Tuesday, as Muskegon residents will vote on a $106 million bond proposal for Muskegon Public Schools. If passed, the money would fund the construction of a new middle school, upgrade a number of athletic facilities, and pay for multiple improvements and repairs.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended the stay at home order until May 15th, but Muskegon Public Schools has decided however, not to move the election date, and proceed with the vote.

But, the City Clerk’s office is leery of the district's decision, says Muskegon City Clerk Anny Meisch.

“You know, everything is subject to change, I hope they watched Wisconsin and saw what happened over there, but we are really, really pushing these absentee ballots,” Muskegon City Clerk Anne Meisch said.

The State of Wisconsin held a controversial primary election earlier in April, where residents had to choose between forgoing the right to vote or risk getting the coronavirus at the ballot box.

That’s why Meisch says the City of Muskegon is urging everyone to take the time to vote via the mail.

“So, the State of Michigan just sent out 26,000 plus absentee ballots to all our registered voters,” Meisch said.

All precincts will be closed for the election, except one at City Hall.
