Michigan State employee files complaint over union dues

A Michigan State University employee has filed a complaint saying she was billed for hundreds of dollars in union dues despite resigning her membership.

The Lansing State Journal reports the complaint was filed this month with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission on behalf of Nichole Frattaroli, an information technologist.

At issue are dues withheld from Frattaroli's pay in the last three months of 2015. The complaint also states Frattaroli was asked to pay $560 in dues for January-August 2016 to the MSU Administrative Professional Association.

Union President Maury Koffman says in an email that the APA "will not be discussing the matter publicly and will honor the legal process to address this complaint."

Michigan's right-to-work law makes union support voluntary in private and most public workplaces.
