Michigan is getting more than $7 million to help state police handle untested sexual assault evidence kits, combat human trafficking and other efforts.
State police director Col. KristeKibbeyEtue announced the funding Wednesday. Grants also will to help improve criminal history records and conduct sex offender enforcement.
The grants include nearly $1.4 million from the Bureau of Justice Assistance's Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.
Funding also includes nearly $2 million that was earlier announced from the Manhattan district attorney's Sexual Assault Kit Program.
Officials have said that more than 10,000 sexual assault kits dating back decades that were found in a Detroit police property storage facility have been tested. The kits were among 11,341 found in 2009. They were handed over to state police for forensic testing.
