The Michigan Democratic Party is accusing United States Representative Bill Huizenga of using campaign donations to fund a lavash lifetstyle of luxurious hotels, golf resorts and expensive restaurants. During a press conference Thursday morning, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillion said that Congressman Huizenga had “clearly broke the law” when it came to using campaign funds on travel and meals, citing over $200,000 his campaign has spent this year alone.
“Instead of using his campaign account as a vehicle for promoting his ideas, or telling voters why he should represent them, Huizenga has used it as his own personal slush fund,” Dillion said.
Still, it’s unclear if any Federal Campaign Finance laws have been broken. Meanwhile, the Michigan Democratic Party says it’s filling a complaint with the Federal Election Commission and is requesting an investigation.
Jim Barry is Congressman Huizenga’s campaign chair and issued this statement in response:
“This false attack is a ridiculous attempt to smear Bill Huizenga and it rings hollow. Bill is a staunch advocate for West Michigan and the people of his district know Bill. They will see this for what it is: a despicable attempt to smear a good man in a cheap attempt to score political points. It is particularly ironic that it comes from the MDP who has a long and sordid history with shady campaign finance dealings.”
