Mayor Mike Duggan is responding to the ACLU’s complaint against police use of facial recognition

The American Civil Liberties Union is making a complaint against the Detroit Police Department after a Black man was mis-identified by facial recognition software and subsequently arrested. Attorneys for the man say police should stop using the technology during investigations. Mayor Mike Duggan disagrees. He says the arrest was the effect of bad police work.

“The early days of DNA testing, there were these kinds of issues. The early days of ballistics testing, there were these kinds of issues. What we need to do is make sure the technology is being used properly.”

Duggan says police should only use facial recognition if they have a clear still image of a potential suspect and it should only be used for violent crimes. He says the software should not be the basis of a warrant even though it’s been used that way in the past.
