Many schools closed across Michigan following snowstorm

Many students across Michigan's Lower Peninsula are home from school as communities dig out from a snowstorm that snarled traffic and left hazardous traveling conditions in its wake. Some districts had closed Wednesday in anticipation of slippery, snow-covered roads and the number of closings increased on Thursday following the snow.

Detroit's public school district was shut for the day after sending students home early on Wednesday. The storm dropped more than 8 inches (20 centimeters) of snow on parts of the Lower Peninsula, with the Detroit area seeing more than 6 inches (15 centimeters) in places.

More snow is in the forecast for Friday, including heavy lake-effect snow along Lake Michigan in the northwestern Lower Peninsula.
