More local government leaders are feeling insecure about their fiscal health than in years past.

A new study shows the first decline in feelings about fiscal health since the end of the Great Recession. Michigan’s economy is improving, but local government leaders across cities, counties, townships and villages are feeling stressed.

This is the first decline in feelings on fiscal health since 2010.

Fewer local officials say their jurisdictions are better able to meet fiscal needs now than the year before. They also report state aid is decreasing and they are getting less property tax revenues.

Tom Ivackois the Center Administrator at the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy at the University of Michigan.

"It’s tough to say what’s going to happen," he says. "But if this reversal can happen when the economy is improving, that’s a pretty big warning sign, I think."
