Listen to Full Speech: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addresses budget woes at Grand Rapids Economic Club

Economic Club of Grand Rapids

Negotiations to come up with a long-term plan to fix Michigan’s crumbling roads have been put on hold, as Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Republican Legislative leadership announced this week that their main priority is the budget.

It’s somewhat of a defeat for the new governor, who had earlier this summer declared that she would not sign a budget without money set aside to address Michigan’s deteriorating highways and bridges.

However, with a potential government shutdown looming October 1st if a budget is not passed, Whitmer says she had to reconsider her position.

In this speech Whitmer gave to the Grand Rapids Economic Club Luncheon on Monday, the Governor calls on Michigan’s legislature to come up with a viable solution to fix the roads, as well as increasing funding for Michigan’s public education system.
