Lawmakers in Lansing say they are ready to take a deeper look at regulating a class of chemicals known as PFAS. The toxic substances have been in many groundwater and drinking water sites throughout the state. PFAS chemicals have been used in manufacturing and in firefighting foam at sites throughout the state.
State officials are testing for PFAS statewide… but the legislature has yet to act on PFAS.
Republican Gary Howell chairs the House Natural Resources committee. He says he’s not sure what the solution is for PFAS contamination, so he’d like to hear from experts this fall.
“I have an open mind on this issue.”
Democrat Winnie Brinks of Grand Rapids says most lawmakers are beginning to see that the problem is serious and widespread.
“There are so many of our constituents who are very concerned about this.”
Brinks proposed a measure with rigorous limits for PFAS contamination. She says it’s time for lawmakers to act on PFAS.
