Kent District Library aims to change its employee demographics to one that represents community

Today more than ever before immigrants are shifting Kent County demographics and the Kent County District Library wants to stay ahead of the curve.  Sara Proaño who works as the community engagement manager at KDL says one way they are doing this is by hosting a class to introduce non-English speakers to a job at the library.

“So it’s a way to invite individuals that might have worked or have had some sort of professional or just job experience in their communities back where they come from and invite them to join our team but providing them with the skills that they will need to succeed in this job.”

The six-week class will be hosted by the Literacy Center of West Michigan and will offer students the opportunity to learn the basic skills required to perform the job of a library shelver.

“So its an opportunity for them to know what the library does and what kind of responsibilities and advantages the person has when they join the library world; and then once they determine that they like that idea that they do want to go ahead and apply then we will invite them to apply.”

Those interested in taking the class can attend a session on either Tuesday or Thursday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the KDL Wyoming Branch.
