Good news out of Kent County for residents in need of home repairs who may not be able to afford them. The Board of Commissioners recently approved additional funds for repairs on homes owned by low to moderate income families.
“The funding has been increased so that we could provide more services and expand opportunities.”
Darrell Singleton II is the manager of the Housing Commission and Community Development for Kent County.
He says funds have not only increased – the number has more than doubled for eligible homeowners to make much needed repairs to their homes.
“Specifically roofs and furnaces were an issue for a while with some of our homeowners. The average furnace costs $3,500 at a minimum. So services like this are definitely needed.”
The board recently approved the additional funds, which stem from a HUD grant. The county contracts with Home Repair Services, or HRS.
Eligible residents would previously get up to $3,500, but the amended contract now allows for up to $10,000 through June 30.
“Covers anything from roofs, septic systems, furnaces and mobility impairments in order to improve access and use of their homes.”
Singleton says on average, they help between 150 and 200 families per year through HRS.
Both homeowners and renters are eligible for these funds if they qualify.
