Health director in Macomb County to retire next month

The health director of one of Michigan’s most populated counties is retiring after eight years in the job.

Macomb County Health Department Director William Ridella said he had planned to retire earlier in the year but he stayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. He will leave next month.

“I wanted to continue as long to help deal with this crisis in public health,” he told The Macomb Daily. “Now that the vaccine is coming out, there is a beacon of light out there and we’re moving in the right direction.”

Ridella started working in Macomb County as a nutritionist in 1979. He also worked for the Detroit Health Department. County officials said Ridella’s replacement has been narrowed to 10 candidates.

Ridella has been praised for his accomplishments, including the department being in the final stages of possible accreditation by the National Public Health Accreditation Board.
