The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the weekend report of a Grand Valley State University student sexually assaulted near the Allendale campus.

The alleged sexual assault of a Grand Valley student took place Sunday morning between 3:30 and 4:00 AM in an off-campus parking lot at the Campus West Apartments. The student reported two unknown men were responsible for the assault. No further description provided.

With Grand Valley’s fall semester classes starting this week, GVSU President Thomas J. Haas says he’s “disturbed and saddened by the report of a sexual assault” and addressed it with students in a letter that reads in part, “As a campus community, we have a responsibility to each other. Creating a campus community free from sexual violence takes vigilance from all of us. Every member must play an active role in fostering a healthy community. While we must care for each other, let me be clear — sexual assault is only the perpetrator’s fault.”

University officials are asking anyone with information to call the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office @ (616) 738-4022 or Silent Observer @ (877) 887-4536.
