Monday’s weather gave many area students an extra day off following their Thanksgiving holiday. It also extended a series of GRPS superintendent search input meetings into next week.

Kent County’s largest school district, Grand Rapids Public Schools, is looking for your input on their next superintendent. Town hall meetings are being held this week and next so people can share their thoughts on the characteristics they’d like to see in a new schools chief. That person will succeed Teresa Weatherall Neal who is set to retire at the end of June.

In addition to the town hall events, Kent ISD leaders are scheduling meetings with community organizations to ensure the broadest possible participation. The idea is to accommodate as many people and get as much input as possible, according to Kent ISD Superintendent Ron Caniff. He credits part of Neal’s success with her ability to listen to and respond to community needs.

Town Hall meetings are scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Cesar E. Chavez Elementary on Grandville; Thursday, November 29 at Gerald R. Ford Academic Center on Madison, and Monday, December 3 at City High Middle on Plainfield.

People can also share their thoughts in English or in Spanish through an online survey at GRPS.org.
