Gretchen Whitmer names Detroit native, Garlin Gilchrist II as running mate

The November ballot continues to take shape. Today Michigan Democrats rounded out their part of the top of the ballot.

Gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer announced her pick for lieutenant governor.

Garlin Gilchrist is a Detroit native with a background in social media strategy and community organization. He’s also the former Director of Innovation and Emerging Technology for the city of Detroit.

“I’m bringing a lot of experience to this opportunity to make sure we have a holistic sense of what government can do.”

Gilchrist will likely be the only male at the top of the Democratic ticket this year. The party will officially choose its candidates for Secretary of State and Attorney General at a convention this weekend. Both those spots are expected to go to female candidates.

Whitmer’s Republican opponent, Bill Schuette chose former state Representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons for his running mate last week.
