Van Andel Arena opened in 1996. As a midmarket venue, it has an industry track record for consistently being one of the busiest for its size. As a 24-year old structure, in heavy use, it’s in need of some improvement.
The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority and Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority are committing $2.1 million toward what it describes as a “full demolition of the existing plaza and construction of an enhanced public space featuring seating, new trees and landscaping.” That will also include new lighting and a snow-melt system.
Plaza demolition begins in the spring with the new plaza greeting visitors in the fall.
