The 2019 report ranks 302 cities. At the top of list are San Francisco, Fredericksburg, Washington D.C., Boston and Brooklyn. Grand Rapids is 171st among the senior-friendly cities.
Caring.com makes its determination based on health care, senior living and housing, community involvement, transportation, quality of life and affordability.
Grand Rapids beats the national averages for primary care physicians and patient satisfaction. The crime rate is low and housing costs are roughly $530 below the national average. The average cost of assisted living is about $755 below the national average.
One area where Grand Rapids fell short is traffic congestion., but sites The Rapid as a benefit for seniors.
As for quality of life there’s fishing, boating, and popular destinations like Frederik Meijer Gardens and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.
