Gov. Whitmer's 45-cent gas tax to fix the roads is "dead"

Democratic House leader Christine Greig doesn’t think the governor’s proposed 45-cent fuel tax increase will ever happen. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a fellow democrat, proposed the hike in her budget proposal back in March as a way to raise money for the roads. Greig says Democrats are trying to work with Republicans to put together a roads plan and a state budget.

“I’m not going to do a hypothetical on 45-cents," Greig said. "We’ve had a lot of conversation that that’s probably the extreme that won’t happen.”

Greig says lawmakers need to come up with other options to pay for the roads. She says that’s because the Republican majority’s resistance makes the plan effectively dead.
