Loose change in your pockets now a has a home thanks to new donation coin containers at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.  The goal is to move the screening process along while helping a local charity.

“We had some of our board members who were the first to donate. We might even see some international coins sometimes.”

That’s Tara Hernandez, Marketing Communications Director at Grand Rapids International Airport.  She says they just installed two coin containers at the airport outside of the security checkpoints.  It’s set up for donations to help those in need.

“We kept seeing people, going through the security check point, you’re already worrying about a bunch of things. A lot of people forget it, so we thought, what better way, we could do something with that change people are leaving behind.”

The program is called GRReat Change”, emphasis on the GR in “Great.  “

“So, we’ve installed two coin containers. One in the standard screening lane, one in the TSA lane. People can drop their change, they can drop dollars.  It holds everything. That money will all go to Mel Trotter Ministries and its being matched by Lake Michigan Credit Union.  So we hope to not only expedite the screening process but give aback to a good cause in the community.”

Hernandez says Gerald Ford International Airport is unveiling these new containers just in time for the busy fall schedule at the airport… as well as in time for an increasing need at Mel Trotter when the holidays start to draw near.
