Class action lawsuit filed after 'awful' firing of 150 employees without warning

Muskegon Family Care

Two former employees of Muskegon Family Care have filed a class-action lawsuit against the health care provider, after 150 workers were unexpectedly fired last Friday. The lawsuit filed this week in U.S. District Court, and seeks 60 days’ worth of wages and benefits as well as compensation for remaining vacation time.

Shannon L. Hamilton is one of the names attached to the lawsuit. She says, the lawsuit represents all of the employees who were let go on Friday. Many, she said, who are single mothers, and many who were left without a job, and without health insurance.

“It was awful, people were crying,” Hamilton said. “For some this is it, this is their only income. It was a very emotional day.”

The health care provider located in Muskegon Heights this week announced Monday that it would be permanently shutting its doors on March 31st, due to financial hardships, debt, and the inability to pay its employees.

Meanwhile Michigan State Police have launched an official investigation into claims that former CEO Sheila Bridges embezzled funds from Muskegon Family Care and drove the company into ruin. Bridges was terminated from her position in 2019.

WGVU reached out to Muskegon Family Care. As of 3:45 PM Wednesday, phone calls were not returned.
