Another group plans to try to bypass Whitmer signature on abortion changes

Michigan Heartbeat Coalition

A Michigan group wants to go around Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s veto threat on a controversial proposed ban on an abortion procedure.

The Michigan Heartbeat Coalition filed ballot measure language today. It would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Mark Gurley is with the group behind the measure. He says the Michigan Heartbeat Coalition actually does not want the measure to go on the ballot.

“We’re looking to skip that part, just say, ‘Hey the voters want this, House and Senate please approve it.”

What Gurley is referring to is a process for this type of ballot proposal. If the measure gets enough signatures, before it goes on the November 20-20 ballot the Legislature could adopt it. That would mean that the Republican led Legislature could make the ban a law without the Democratic governor’s signature.

The group needs more than 300-thousand qualifying signatures to get on the ballot.
