Related Content Groups ask presidential candidates to support Great Lakes By Associated Press • Mar 2, 2016 NASA2 / NASA Business, environment and government organizations in the Great Lakes states are asking the presidential candidates to pledge support for cleaning up the region's waters. The groups Wednesday released a priority list that includes spending at least $300 million a year on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which was established in 2009. It focuses on battling invasive species, cleaning toxic hot spots, reducing farm and city runoff and restoring wildlife habitat. The platform also includes measures to reduce harmful algae blooms. Environmental group threatens lawsuit over Mackinac pipeline By Associated Press • Feb 23, 2016 Gregory Varnum via Wikimedia | CC BY 3.0 / wikimedia.org An environmental group is threatening to sue the federal government over a Great Lakes oil pipeline. The National Wildlife Federation notified the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration on Monday. The group is targeting Enbridge Energy's Line 5, which runs from Superior, Wisconsin, to Sarnia, Ontario. A nearly 5-mile-long section reaches beneath the Straits of Mackinac, the link between Lakes Huron and Michigan. Enbridge says the underwater section has never leaked and remains safe. Environmentalists want it removed.
