African-American Celebration partners with ArtPrize for 2nd year

Artistic contributions of African Americans will be highlighted during the second annual Grand Rapids African-American Art and Music Celebration, as part of ArtPrize 2016.

The two-day event kicks off Friday and runs through 10 p.m. Saturday at Calder Plaza. The goal is to immerse the community in art, music, dance and food reflecting the city’s diversity.

Kayleigh Kramer is a board member for the event. She says they’re working to build upon the success of last year’s inaugural celebration.

"It’s extremely significant to highlight all the different cultural aspects of the residents here in Grand Rapids, and coming together as community and recognizing all our residents have to offer is a wonderful thing."

Kramer says the event celebrates the outstanding contributions of African American artists through visual, performing and culinary arts, with some great headliners.

"Well, you’re going to be able to catch Avalon Cutts - she’s going to be performing some soul music, we have Isaac Norris with jazz, design line with reggae.

"On Saturday, you’ll be able to do some Zumba, some dancing, there’s going to be some worship and praise with Glenda Williams, cooking demos with Jimmy Hill. You’re going to catch some blues, rap and even American Idol contestant Maurice Townsend will be there with R & B music."

One added feature is a simulcast at 10 a.m. Saturday of the grand opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
