Federal figures say the Detroit, Dearborn and Warren areas are home to several thousand Syrian immigrants and The Detroit News reports activists in the Detroit area are pushing for more aid to refugees from the Middle East and Africa.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of a Michigan firefighter who authorities say was deliberately struck by a pickup truck as he collected money for charity.
The suspect, Grant Taylor of Lansing, was arraigned Thursday. He's also charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death and fleeing police.

The state police and Flint Police Department will receive grants to help reduce backlogs of untested sexual assault kits.
Nearly $2 million will go to the state police to test more than 3,600 kits. Flint gets $163,000 to test 246 kits.
The funding is part of combined $79 million pledged Thursday by a New York district attorney's office initiative and the U.S. Justice Department to cut into backlogs across the country.
