High-impact tutoring emphasizes sustained and strong relationships between tutors and their students in the classroom, often for multiple days a week and for weeks or months at a time.

Holly Windram is the Executive Director with Hope Network’s Michigan Education Corps, a nonprofit that’s provided 160 high-impact tutors to 90 different Michigan schools. She says while many districts have seen improvements in subjects like reading, others are still playing catch-up from the pandemic in subjects like math.
“High-impact tutoring can come in as a solution to accelerate the closing of achievement gaps for students in specific skill areas, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with boots-on-the-ground in schools.”
Thoren Edbrooke is a high-impact tutor with preschoolers at Bunker Elementary in Muskegon.
“I’m mostly in the classroom with them all day, and if anything changes then I guess I change with them.”
He explains what his students get out of their time with him.
“They get another person that is on their side. They get another person that looks at them on their level and, I think especially with my role, which is just solely focused on helping the kids advance, I think it is perfect that we can do this.”
Since the program’s inception in 2012, the Hope Network Michigan Education Corps has served more than 24,000 students throughout the state.
