The elections bureau rejected some petitions because circulators failed to check a box to indicate whether or not they’re being paid.
Josh Hovey is with the Michiganders for Fair Lending campaign. He says the issue is whether state law actually requires that box to be checked.
“Our argument is that those petitions that were thrown out were done so illegally and improperly.”
Hovey says the court decision on whether to count those signatures could be the difference between whether or not the question appears on the November ballot. A state elections board has until the end of the month to certify whether the campaign has gathered enough signatures.
