Michigan GOP to hold Grand Rapids endorsement convention

Democrats also held an early convention where incumbents Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General Dana Nessel were endorsed for reelection.

Michigan Republicans will hold a convention in Grand Rapids this weekend to choose early favorites for nominations to statewide offices.

There are three-way races for both attorney general and secretary of state. Those will serve as a test of former President Donald Trump’s continued influence over Michigan Republicans. A Trump endorsement remains important, but some Republicans are concerned his picks might be too extreme to win in November.

Candidates are supposed to respect the results of the endorsement convention prior to the official nominating convention in August, but that does not entirely preclude a continued fight from candidates and delegates unhappy with the results.
