August is Child Support Awareness month. Nearly one in seven children in the U.S. are living in poverty.
A new study shows Michigan ranks in the middle of the pack when it comes to states with the most “underprivileged children.” WalletHub released the report this week.
“Conditions have been harder for under for children this year and last year due to the financial hardships caused by the pandemic. So that’s another reason why we’re looking into this.”
Jill Gonzalez is a WalletHub Analyst. She says with August being Child Support Awareness month WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia to bring awareness to the condition of underprivileged children throughout the U.S.
“And it’s pretty comprehensive. We looked at 27 different indicators of neediness. From the share of children in households with below poverty incomes, to child food insecurity rates to the share of maltreated children. So, really looking at socio economics, health and education from state to state.”
Gonzalez says their report shows Michigan almost right in the middle at number 23.
“Number one would mean the most underprivileged. So, Michigan is right around average, but leans to more under privileged, specifically when it comes to health. A higher share of maltreated children and a higher share of uninsured children.”
WalletHub says nearly one in 7 children live in poverty and according to the Children’s Defense Fund, a child is abused or neglected every 47 seconds. Adding the total costs of maltreatment per year reach over 80-billion dollars. You can find the complete report at WalletHub.com
