Indian Trails Golf Course announced today that it will become the first golf course in the state to be recognized as a Speedgolf-friendly course by Speedgolf USA. What exactly is Speedgolf? WGVU has the answer.
“Running, that term is relative, I would say. You don’t have to be a super speedy runny to play speed golf. But, you are jogging at the very least after every shot, to your next shot.”
Craig Kooienga, Senior Golf Course Greens Keeper at Indian Trails, is describing “Speed Golf” and yes, that’s a thing. It’s a combination of running and golfing for a fitness-oriented alternative to the traditional game.
“We just believe that there’s a niche there, that’s a little bit more exercise focused. Gives people a chance to get a good workout. Walking 18 holes is a good workout, its very healthy. But Speedgolf, is kind of taking it up a notch as far a workout goes.”
Kooienga says there are only a dozen to 20 golf courses around the country that offer speed golf, the closest being in the Chicago area. He says it encourages social interaction but is also competitive.
“So, we’re going to go out in groups of two or three. But we calculate score by the amount of time that it takes you to play the golf and how many strokes you to play golf, add em’ up and you’ve got your score.”
Kooienga says says Speedgolf may bring in new golfers who are looking for something quicker than a typical round. He adds Speedgolf tee times will be offered Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 6:45 to 7 am. You can book tee times and get more info on this at the Indian Trails website at indiantrailsgc.org/speedgolf
