After the deadliest year in city history, 2021 is picking up where 2020 left off, as the Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating another homicide that occurred, this time, on the City’s Northwest side.  According to a press release, the murder took place Monday, January 3, at around 11:45 PM in the 1200 block of Alpine Avenue NW.  Officers were called to the location on the report of a female who had been shot.  The victim was transported to an area hospital where she died from her injuries the next day.

The victim has been identified as 65-year-old Sandra Day Carter of Grand Rapids.  An autopsy has been performed and the Kent County Medical Examiner has ruled the death a homicide.  Detectives and GRPD Forensics personnel continue to work the case and are asking anyone with information to contact the department.

Last year, Grand Rapids had more murders in a single year than it had ever had in history with 38. The previous record had been 34 set back in 1993.
