Ottawa County launches free drive up COVID-19 testing

US Air Force--unlicensed

With the number of new positive Covid-19 cases remaining steady, Ottawa County Health officials are urging area residents to take advantage of drive-up testing that launched Monday

Organized by the Michigan National Guard, and with the help of Medical Reserve Corps volunteers and Ottawa County employees, residents will have the opportunity to get tested for coronavirus as health officials in Ottawa County say, the numbers are not where they want them to be, with 4.4 percent of those currently tested getting a positive COVID-19 result.

One key factor for the steady numbers could be the fact that Holland and Grand Haven beaches are an extremely popular tourist destination and are also frequented by county residents, and social distancing and mask wearing is not prevalent to beach-goers and swimmers.

But in an effort to track where the positive numbers keep coming from, the county is launching six free drive up events over the next two weeks, where anyone over the age of 18 can get tested.

Kristina Weighmink is the Ottawa County Public Health Information Officer. She says that the County is by no means out of the woods yet, and residents must remain vigilant.

“Our community has been working so hard, and contributing so much to slow the spread of COVID-19,” Weighmink said. “We understand that many people are eager to gather with friends and family, but we must stay focused on disease prevention methods. To minimize the risk of further infection, and to make sure our health system is not overburdened."

Monday marks the first day of testing. The next drive up event is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Holland Middle School.
