Less than one week after health officials announced the first coronavirus in Muskegon County, the area’s first deaths have now been confirmed. Muskegon Public health officials say two people so far have died from COVID-19, an 83-year old man and a 78-year-old man, but other than that, authorities are not releasing any other details including their names or whether the men had underlying health conditions that contributed to their death.

As the city braces for a surge in the number of presumptive positive cases of the coronavirus, Muskegon Mayor Steve Gawron last Monday called on residents to help prevent the spread of the disease.

“If everyone does their part, our community will remain strong,” Gawron said. “Let’s be good neighbors. Let’s practice patience. And kindness. Plenty of social distancing, but even more, social support.”

The county has reported six confirmed coronavirus cases, with two deaths. Muskegon Health officials say they are expecting that number to jump over the next few weeks, and urging everyone in the area to stay home.
