'A race against the clock' to move lakeshore homes before erosion does
Relentless waves and high water have scoured the lakeshore over the past few months, destroying a handful of properties already, and threatening dozens of others. Experts are warning homeowners to move their homes from the water or risk losing them, as did one Muskegon County lakeshore home that collapsed on New Year’s Eve.
The process of relocating one's home is complicated, however, due to the permits that need to be acquired in order to do so; and with Lake Michigan’s continuing beach erosion, homeowners are in a race with the clock.
Michigan State Senator Rodger Victory introduced legislation last week in Lansing that would streamline the permitting process, helping homeowners get a quicker okay from the state to begin moving or relocating homes.
