Nessel announces charges in Catholic clergy abuse investigation

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has charged five current and former priests with multiple sexual abuse crimes. These are some of the first charges to come out of an extensive investigation into every Catholic diocese in the state.

Attorney General Dana Nessel says the investigation is really just getting started – and could take years. Last October the office executed simultaneous search warrants on all seven dioceses in Michigan. The office has since been combing through the documents and fielding hundreds of tips.

Ann Sherman is an Assistant Solicitor General in the A-G’s office. She says they’ve come across documents that, in some cases, show members of the church blaming the children for their own abuse.

“These types of documents have made this investigation grueling and heartbreaking.”

The men are charged with a combined total of 21 counts of varying degrees of criminal sexual conduct. Three of them face potential life sentences.
