Authorities say an officer is on leave after fatally shooting a man as police investigated an attack that left a 41-year-old woman dead in western Michigan.

Police say 43-year-old Lamont Gulley was threatening officers with a knife Friday night in Kentwood when he was shot. He died at a hospital.

Officers approached him after following footsteps in the snow from an apartment complex where Casey Kempker was found bleeding about 9 p.m. in an apartment.

Police say Gulley attacked Kempker and fled.

Police say they were married, but WOOD-TV reports family members say a ceremony had been held but paperwork wasn't filed.

A 7-year-old boy was found unharmed in the apartment.

Police say Monday the Kentwood officer who shot Gulley in on leave until the investigation is completed.
