Legislature approves $50 million to bail out Detroit

The Legislature has sent Governor Rick Snyder a short-term bailout of the Detroit public schools.

This stop-gap measure would send the district almost 50 million dollars to ensure the Detroit schools don’t run out of money in the next couple of weeks. It also buys time for the Legislature to works on a longer-term rescue plan.

But the governor says this is a good start.

“I do want to see a package that solves – a solution for DPS and for Detroit           education.”

The state Senate adopted a plan this week to provide 715 million dollars from tobacco settlement money to pay for educating Detroit students while local taxes would go to pay off debt. The House will continue hearings after the Legislature’s spring break.
