An American Indian tribe planning a casino in Muskegon County has completed its purchase of 120 acres of land owned by a school district.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians completed the $500,000 purchase of land from Fruitport Community Schools. District superintendent Bob Szymoniak says the tribe finalized the purchase in December.

The tribe has applied to the federal government for approval to build a casino about 2.5 miles from the property purchased from the school district. Thomas J. St. Dennis, an attorney for the tribe, says the tribe is continuing to explore how it will use the property and expects to finalize a proposed use in two or three months.

The property is zoned residential and is heavily forested.
