Medical marijuana group not pursuing ballot campaign

A group that was expected to pursue a medical marijuana ballot question in 2016 is not moving forward right now.

The Michigan Responsibility Council said last year it would start collecting signatures in 2016 to add legal protections for dispensaries – among other things. That’s if lawmakers failed to pass bills to that effect by then.

“But things have changed, frankly.”

Paul Welday is the group’s chairman. He says there’s reason to believe the Legislature could pass the bills early this year. That’s despite the fact that they’ve been stalled for months. Welday says they’d have to decide by mid-February whether to collect signatures to get on the November ballot.
