Testimony begins in murder trial of 13-year-old Michigan boy

Jurors have heard the 911 call from a 13-year-old boy charged in the fatal stabbing of a 9-year-old boy on a western Michigan playground.

The call was played Tuesday in a Grand Rapids courtroom during the first day of the boy's murder trial.

The Associated Press isn't naming the defendant because of his age. He was 12 at the time.

He can be heard telling a dispatcher that he "just stabbed someone" and that he was "fed up with life" and wanted to die.

Michael Connor Verkerke was stabbed to death Aug. 4, 2014, after falling off a slide in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids. The two boys didn't know each other before the younger boy was approached at the playground.

The trial is expected to continue through at least Thursday.
