The Rapid becomes the first transit agency in Michigan to expand fare payment methods to now include contactless payments

Rapid riders can now tap and ride across 27 fixed routes, two BRT lines, and six on-demand vehicles using a contactless payment method for easier access to its services. Here’s Cassi Cooper, Rapid Digital Outreach Specialist.

“We’re excited to launch this cause it’s just another way to increase accessibility to our services.  You know we knew this was something our customers could really benefit from. We’ve heard them the last couple years that this is something that they’ve been wanting. And just in the era of all things digital, it seemed like a natural next step for enhancement for our riders.”

Cooper says “The Rapid” riders can now use Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards that have the contactless symbol or chip for tapping. Riders can also use mobile phones or smartwatches using Apple, Google or Samsung Pay. But Cooper adds, all other current payment methods remain available.

“Cash, single ride tickets and what we call our wave card. Our wave card is a smart pass, it’s a reloadable pass, and we have different ones, if you qualify for a reduced fare, if you’re a youth rider.”

Cooper says this contactless method will also be helpful for visitors or others during events like ArtPrize and the like. This she says, just makes it easier.

Riders will also be able to check their previous trips and payment history on the Contactless page at wave.ridetherapid.org.
